A network is one thing that is required at all organizations that have a server. Even if there is only 1 server it almost certainly accesses the net. Thus there will be a cable running from the workstation to the carrier's equipment cable or ADSL modem. This is realistically a very basic network. However there is a multitude of computers and at least one switch connecting them. Many have several large switches of which the most common brand is Cisco. The point is that all companies need at least some amount of computer networking to operate. Wireless is also very common. This allows computers to use the network to access the network and wander around. This also is used extensively in warehouse management software (WMS). The idea is that the staff can utilize software to locate where stuff should go without needing to slow down to do it. In this case the advantage is in having quality network equipment. If the equipment of the system breaks then the entire system stops. This many firms install double the hardware and wire everything to each device. Hopefully if something fails it doesn't get sick so that the network can recognize the issue and operate without the other failed equipment. The caveat is that a downed device must be replaced before another failure occurs despite no issues affecting users.

Network Address Translation (NAT) is popular on modern networks. The purpose is to simply transform one IP address to another address. This is useful for example if the workstations all are on a private subnet but need to access the"'net"through gateways that perform the NAT .

A 802.11 printer host can be very useful to the person who desires to print on a WLAN. The goal is that the print server lets the user print to the printer without connecting a cable. All printers must have this feature to receive print jobs directly from laptop without a cable.

There is a company called Cisco based in California United States in North America that manufactures enterprise class routing and switching hardware. Actually they are the dominant vendor of network equipment in the world. They control most of the network hardware market everywhere. Certification with this hardware is therefore quite common.
